We are now entering the summer months in the woods, and it's amazing how much has happened since I last posted seven weeks ago. After a few rainstorms, the vegetation seems to have exploded overnight. Everything is out now, including poison ivy and all the bugs. But believe it or not, I haven't seen a single tick, yet. Could be because my jeans are treated with Permethrin and I wear Picaridin repellent on exposed skin every time I venture out.
We are now officially on baby watch. So far spotted on camera are a mother and baby groundhog, and two adorable fawn twins. No signs of opossum, raccoon, or fox kin, but I expect to see little coons over the next few weeks. A pair of adult females at the end of their weaning stage forage together.
The foxes continue to forage night and day and show up on almost all the cameras. The mange on the male fox seems to be improving steadily. Now the pair are the official mascots for the new Suburban Woods Facebook page. I hope you follow along.
At this point there are four cameras strategically located in areas where I've noticed tracks or suspect wildlife to pass through. Each day I discover something new, like this Eastern Box Turtle crossing over the sidewalk that outlines the perimeter. S(he's) adorable.
